GOLF.

CONTESTS IN BRITAIN. BENTLEY BEATS LANGLEY. HAMILTON'S SCOTTISH TITLE. LONDON, May 3. An 18-year-old schoolboy, John Langley, holder of the bpys' golf championship, in the semi-final of the English amateur championship on Friday defeated Cyril Tolley, winner of almost as many championships as his opponent has years. In one of the finest championship matches seen, Tolley was four down at the fourteenth and won the next three, but Langley imperturably putted the eighteenth, halving the hole. In the 36 holes final oil Saturday Langley met H. Bentley, Walker Cup player and ex-holder of the French and German championships, who beat him 5 and 4. In the semi-final Bentley had defeated C. Stowc, a coal miner, who earlier had defeated J. de Forest, son of a millionaire baron. Bentley and Langley were all square at the eighteenth after which the older player's experience, very accurate putting and amazing bunker shots made him unbeatable.

In the semi-finals of the Scottish amateur golf championship at Carnoustie, Jack McLean (holder) was sensationally defeated by E. D. Hamilton, whose height is only oft 2in, and who is the smallest competitor in senior golf. Hamilton won 3 and 2, McLean's putting being poor. In the final, Hamilton beat Robert Neill, 1 up.
