MANUKAU CLUB

The club will commence its twelfth road racing season on Saturday afternoon next at Avondale South, when a junior race over two laps, 5 miles, and a senior event over six laps, 15 miles, will be conducted.

During the Easter holidays several of the club men took the opportunity to get in a little distance work. Road ace Lionel Nicholson left on Good Friday for Otorohanga and hardy road riders, Bill Morris, Ike Reid, Dave Lawson and Bill Walker, left for the same destination a day later, while Cyril -Cronk also made for the same venue, where the popular professional meeting was held on the Monday. Fortunately the weather conditions were not so adverse as anticipated.

The club is now on its second decade of road racing and the prospects are again good. Last year members accounted for every championship, so their aim 'will have to be exceptionally high this season to maintain such a fine reputation. Johnnie Brown will be expected to feature, while Nicholson, winner of the 100 miles title in record time for the Papakura to Ngaruawahia and back course, must be considered, although in the shorter races he does not expect to be at his best. Les. Dwight means to do better than last season when he seemed never to strike form, although he trained consistently. In the junior ranks Joe Gillbanks and Chas. Dwight should be the leading lights. Riders are reminded that their cycles must be equipped with both a brake and a bell, and in the case of a free-wheel with two brakes, one to each wheel. Otherwise the machine inspector will be reluctantly compelled to refuse to allow a rider to start. A new method of starting is to be eraployed this year in the centre's races, the first of v.).ich will be held on the first Saturday of May over a '25-mile course, extending from Point Chevalier to the top of the Lincoln Hill, via Birdwood, and back along the Lincoln highway, which now has a fast tar-sealed surface.
