WITH THE AMATEURS. PAPATOETOE CLUB. EASTER COUNTRY VISITS. Cambridge was a real cyclist's mecca on Saturday when the b lg open meeting conducted on the pumice-surfaced trLt at Victoria Square. Competitors from Auckland clubs, Rotorua, New Plvmnntk Huntly Hamilton and all Waikato centra made the meeting go with a swing. On Friday morning Hon Fran,,; Charlie Cochrane, Bill White? Lan Vo ' Alban Vost, hon. members Gordon C,m ningham and Bill Brown (Manukau), Trevor Winsor (a third Manukau boy) Stan Thompson (Northern) and Ralph Water man left from Papatoetoe for the run Of the seven who went right through onlv two were fortunate to get in the placing Ron luancis, Papatoetoe cyclists' captain" demonstrated his versatility by winnine the discus throw and getting third in the javelin and fourth in the shot put. Trevor Winsor, Manukau cyclist, went well to get third in the junior mile and second in the half-mile. The country clubs have some good fast boys, Grey, of Rotorua, being conspicuous from a back mark. Shaw, Hamilton crack showed speed also, but the backmarkers were handicapped by dust from bunches of long and middle-markers. Forsyth (Hamilton), Beer (Rotorua) Kelly (Cambridge) and Murray (New Plymouth) had a good share of the platings Murray being especially successful, winning the points cup for the day and twice showing the way in to Beer and young Kelly. To Kelly goes credit for a great ride in the three-miler. Three were involved in a spill, but the young Cambridge boy re-mounted and chased a bunched field, earning the plaudits of the spectators. Both junior races were won by J. A. Robinson, of Hamilton. The list of trophies was very impressive, and the trophies themselves were excellent.

Next Saturday the road season will commence with a 15 mile unpaced time trial for seniors and a six or eight mile for juniors. Competitors are sent ofi at oneminute intervals and ride solo over the stated course. Times are taken for each rider, and sealed handicaps deducted at the conclusion. Any rider making use of any outside assistance or motor pacing renders himself liable to disqualification—' which is for the rider's own protection. The starting point is at Grinter's Corner, Papatoetoe, the last bus shelter shed of the Passenger Transport Company, about a quarter of a mile past Papatoetoe. New members may enrol at the meeting. The opening of the Papatoetoe Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club's road-racins season will take place to-morrow. A 13mile time trial will be held, starting at Grinter's Corner at 2.15 p.m. There will also be a seven-mile time trial for juniors.
