BENEFIT FOR J. LAIRD. The Auckland Rugby League opens its 1930 season to-morrow with a special series of matches. The proceeds are to be divided between the clubs and a benefit fund for J. Laird, the Marist international player who was injured last year. Mount Albert will engage Richmond in the principal contest at Carlaw Park, where the curtain-raiser will be provided by Newton and Marist. At the North Shore ground the Pukerniro Club (Waikato) will meet the Devonport thirteen. The 'remaining match takes place on No. 2 ground at 3 p.m., when Ponsonby tackles City.
