CENSUS TAKEN.

HOUSEHOLDERS' TASK.

COMPLETION OF FORMS.

QUEST FOR HOMELESS PEOPLE

The head of the house had an unusual task in Auckland last evening to fill in his census paper, which required answers to many questions, ranging from age, religion and nationality to the number —if any—of turkeys and fowls kept about the premises. It was not a difficult paper to fill in, that is if one read the various queries carefully and had the family records handy in case there was doubt about anybody's age.

The arrangements made by the census officials were complete, the distribution of the papers had been carefully made, and from the census office any information that a householder required was readily given. Special arrangements were made for the taking of the census on the express trains on their way to Wellington last evening, a careful check was made on all shipping and fishing boats, while during the night the parks and reserves were searched for homeless people. In the case of the Auckland Domain it was rather a comprehensive task, but a search with torches through shrubbery revealed nobody, and the seats in the vicinity of the Domain gardens in that locality were deserted. The evening was inclined to be chilly, and it was unlikely that anybody, except from sheer force of circumstances, would be spending the night in the open. Now that census night has passed, the next task for the census official? will be the gathering of the completed forms, and it will probably be about two weeks before they are all in.

The census officials in Auckland stated to-day that they were very pleased with the way householders had assisted them and everything had gone most smoothly.
