OFFICIAL EXPLAINS.

CRITICISM OF CHAMPION. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Mr. W. F. Ingram, replying to a complaint of the Canterbury Athletic Centre concerning his published criticisms of V. P. Boot, stated at the N\Z.A.A.A. Council meeting last night, that he had made it clear to officials as soon as lie arrived at the championship meeting at Dunedin that he was attending as a newspaper man, not as a member of the council. lie denied that he had any bias against Boot (winner of the national mile and hall'-milc titles), or that lie had imputed incompetence to the referee at the championship meeting, who might not have seen an incident he saw. A letter of protest from the Canterbury Centre was received, and no action was taken, the chairman, Mr." H. I. Austad, saying that the council had no jurisdiction over the private activities of a member. Mr. Ingram was reported to have written that Boot's times were not good enough to send him to the Olympiad, and that he jostled another runner at the New Zealand championship meeting at Dunedin.
