The homestead was already burning fiercely and nothing could be done to save it. Arrangements had recently -been made to pull down the house for the timber, which was all heart of totara and heart of kauri in good preservation, and the work of demolition should have begun to-day. > The house, which was the property of the estate of the late Mr. J. Connolly, formerly M.P. for Mid-Canterbury, was insured for £2000 with the Ocean Accident and Guarantee Corporation.
