UNABLE TO PAY.
BREACH OF PROBATION. MAORI GIVEN" ANOTHER CHANCE. 1 hat he had failed to comply with the terms and conditions of his release on probation was the charge admitted by >i Maori, Turei Hohepa, aged 3(>, labourer, when he appeared in the Police Court, before Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., this morning. Til October, 1030, said Sub-Inspector Fox, Hohepa appeared in the Magisstrate's Court at Warkworth on seven charges of false pretences. He was convicted and discharged on five counts, sentenced to a short term of imprisonment on another, and on the seventh he was admitted to probation for two years and ordered to make restitution of £3f>. Of this he had only paid £1. A warrant was subsequently issued for his arrest, and he was arrested at Ongarue. His relatives now offered to pay £17 into court .towards restitution, and £1 per week thereafter until the whole amount was liquidated. Mr. J. W. Kealy, who represented Hohepa, said that, although he had a list of previous convictions dating from 1920 to 1930, it was significant that Hohepa had been doing well since 1930. On account of destitution and bad times, Hohepa had been unable to make restitution. Counsel asked that the Maori should be given another chance by having his term of probation extended. The magistrate extended Hohepa's probation for a further 18 months from to-day and ordered that £17 be paid forthwith and thereafter at the rate of £! weekly.
