TAKAPUNA MEETING.

TKE FIRST DAY. GAY ROSE WINS CUP. GALILEE AND TIN LAP SCORE. The first day of the Takapuna Jockey Club's summer meeting was held at Ellerslie on Saturday in perfect weather. There was a fairly good attendance, and the course was in excellent order. The chief event, the Takapuna Cup, was won by Gay Rose, and Galilee scored in the Zealandia Handicap, while Tin Lap'had a narrow victory in the Wynyard Plate. During the day the sum of £24,501 10/ was put through the totalisator, compared with £23,008 10/ for the first day last year, an increase of £1403. After the running of. the Orewa Highweight Handicap, F. Fergus,, rider of King Tut, who ran second, lodged a protest against L'AUegro, the winner, and Tea Chat for interference. After hearing the evidence the protest was dismissed. Surprise in Chief Event. Tybalt was the only withdrawal from the Takapuna Clip, and most money came for Mazir, Royal Appellant and Kelly. Royal Appellant was first out, but Scotland soon moved into the lead, and led along the back from Lagoon, Monanui, Royal Appellant, Kelly, Wait and See, Mazir and Gay Rose. The order across the top was Scotland, Monanui, Lagoon, Royal Appellant, Kelly, Wait and See, Gay Rose, Mazir and Gay Marigold. Scotland was first into the straight from Monanui, Kelly, Royal Appellant and Lagoon. Royal Appellant looked like winning at the distance, but Gay Rose finished with a rattle and won by half a length with Mazir a length and a quarter away, third. Lagoon was fourth then came Kelly, Gay Marigold, '> Scotland, Monanui and Wait and See. A Close Finish. The favourite division for the Calliope ' Handicap comprised Inver, Rulette and < Surella. The start was very uneven, and the first to show out were Marjory ' Daw, Rulette, Surella and Palustre. : Surella then raced through to the front 1 and led across the top from Rulette, Palustre, Marjory Daw, Gay Streak and j Inver. Surella was a shade clear as < the field turned for home, where those J npflresfl tVI» 1 marl on urnrn Pnlnttn - ]

nearest the leader were Rulette, Marjory Daw and Palustre, who ran very wide here. Rulette did best in the run to the judge, and just got up to beat Surella by a neck, with Gay Streak half a length away, third. Inver was fourth, then came Gay Talkie, Abbess of Whitby, Marjory Daw and Lorita. ' '. The. Plate. -In a field:, of nine for the Wynyard Plate, the favourite was Prince Ven, while Valmint and Keith Lu also "carried good money. Velocipede was left t-everal lengths, and Valmint led along the back from Sweet Rose, Tin Lap, Prince Ven, Ringsliot, Loombination and Keith Lu. Sweet Rose then ran through to the front, and was in charge across the top from Prince Ven, Tin Lap, Valmint, Loombination, Ringsliot, Light Comedy and Keith Lu. Sweet Rose was first to turn for home where her nearest attendants were Prince Ven, Tin Lap, Valmint, Ringshot and Light Comedy. A great finish then ensued and Tin Lap staj'cd on to gain the decision by a head from Valmint with Light Comedy a similar distance away third, Prince Ven was fourth, then came Sweet Rose, Keith Lu, Loombination and Velocipede. , A Fine Finish. Betting in the Zcalandia Handicap was confined to Rereatu, Crooning and Galilee, and the public were well on the mark. Crooning and United were a trifle slow to find their feet, and the early leaders were Star Artist and Rereatu, and Galilee went through to the front across the top to show the way to Star Artist, Boughal, Puss Moth, Princess Star, Rereatu, Crooning and United. Galilee was - first into the straight from Puss Moth, Star Artist, Boughal, Princess Star, Rereatu and Crooning. A rare tussle then ensued, and Galilee just held on long enough to beat Rereatu by half a head, with Princess Star a length away. Crooning was fourth, and then finished Star. Artist, Puss Moth and Boughal. Another Surprise. The day's sport concluded with the Raugitoto Handicap, and in a good betting race most support was accorded Tidalia, Dancing Lady and Vera Acre, but again backers were off the mark, and the finish was fought out by littlefancied runners. Vera Acre lost a lot of ground at the start, and Kurapae took up the running from Tualieahe, Bonnie Song, Persian Lady and Tidalia. There was no change across the top, and the onder into the straight was Kurapae, Persian Lady, Arawa Rose, Tualieahe, Tidalia, Bonnie Song and Polly Douglas. Nothing had a chance with Kurapae, who went on to win comfortably by a length and a half from Tualieahe, who was two lengths in front of Te Broney. Polly Douglas was fourth, and then came Vera Acre, Boniiie Song, Persian Lady and Tidalia. Later results were: 1 — TAKAPUNA CUP of £375.
