KEPPEL HURRICANE.
DAMAGE IN THE PACIFIC. AN ERRATIC STORM. (Prom Our Own Correspondent.) » SUVA, January 20. The hurricane that' passed over Keppel Island on Saturday did considerable damage, but particulars are not yet forthcoming. The glass in Suva on Saturday fell to 29.55 about 3.30 p.m., and on Sunday it was so low that experienced residents began to put up "hurricane shutters." Happily the glass rose, and the effects of the storm left the group. The Keppel blow was very erratic, and its course shaped to the south-west, which is unusual, and it is thought that the more southern islands of the Lau group, which have no wireless, may have felt the effects. The last news seems to show that the storm faded in its strength as it went south. It seems to have been localised to the immediate neighbourhood of Keppel Island. Natives in Suva say this is "hurricane weather." It is exceptionally warm, with short, westerly winds, then calms, and showers, with rain among the hills.
