"HOME IS THE SAILOR." SANDERS AND CORNWILL CUPS I | KEEN CONTESTS ASSURED. (By SPEEDWELL.) ' ■No section of His late Majesty's millions of loyal subjects were more sincere in their expressions of sorrow at his demise than were the yachtsmen in every port where the "Red Duster" flics. King George was a keen yachtsman, and • loved his old ship Britannia, which he j owned for 42 years, and, especially before his accession to the Throne 25 years ago, sailed in many a hard-fouglit race with Ailsa, Satanita and others of her class, meeting with a fair share of success. As a patron of the sport he was well known, and many clubs had the honour of Including him in their list, from the Roval Yacht Squadron to much lesser clubs. He kept up with the modern ideas 011 rig and sail plans, and personally attended to the alterations made two years ago to Britannia. I His love for ships and the sea was also j shown by his service in the Navy, in which , he served in all ranks, from midshipman to Admiral of the Fleet, and he retained I his interest in the Senior Service up to the last. All racing fixtures arranged for tomorrow have been cancelled. The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron were to have started their Kawau week-end by a race to Mansion Plouse Bay this evening, followed by their usual events off 8011 Accord harbour to-morrow. request for a contribution to the Sanders Cup fund. The Tarnaki Club is taking a keen interest in the contest and in addition to making a donation to the funds is taking the crews to the homes of members at Mission Bay, Kohimarama and St. Heiier's. The crews will be the guests of the club at a dance on Saturday week, when it is hoped the cup can be presented. The visiting crews and delegates will ba entertained at a smoke concert at the Tamakl clubhouse next Wednesday evening, after the regatta, by the commodore of the club. The officers of local clubs will also be invited to meet the Southern men. A picnic in the Duchess to Oneroa has been arranged for the following Sunday. The Akarana Club will entertain the visitors at their clubhouse on Thursday evening, and other clubs have offered to entertain the Southern men, who appear to have a busy week ahead of them. The five boats taking part in the 1036 contest are Lavina, representing Wellington and sailed by Arthur Johnson; Avenger, which will carry Canterbury's hopes, sailed by Elliott Sinclair; Val is to carry the big O for Otago in the capable hands of Ivan McGrath : Irene, formerly of L.vttelten and winner of the cup for Canterbury In 1934, now represents Southland, where she was purchased after winning the last contest at Stewart Island. Cleaver (mainsheet), Rae Clare (owner) and Ernie Matthews, who has been in the crew of most of Auckland's challengers since Rona's best days. While Aileen, which lias been fitted with a new suit of sails, has proved her merit against the few remaining boats of the class we still have in Auckland, she has not met any of the Southern boats. A. Willetts sailed Avalon when she won the cup for Auckland at Akaroa in 1929 and was also in the crew of Rona at Wellington and has had long experience of this class. lie is relied on by Auckland yachtsmen to "lift the cup" from the strong bold the Southern crews have held over it during the past ten years since IJetty first won it at Dunedin.
