THEFT OF RING.
SOLD TO LOAN FIRM.
OLD OFFENDER GAOLED. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, this day. Pleading guilty to a charge of stealing a gold engagement ring valued at £12 10/, Cecil Carlsen, aged 35, appeared before justices in the Police Court to-day.
In a statement to the police, accused said he bought the ring from the Farmers' Trading Company on the instalment plan, paying -25/ deposit. When he was unable to maintain the payments he disposed of the ring to the Waikato Loan Company for £2 5/. He intended repurchasing the ring from the Loan Company and reimbursing the Farmers' Trading Company.
Detective-Sergeant J. Thompson said accused had been in the habit of using assumed names. He had a list of previous convictions dating back to 1919. Last April he was placed on probation for bigamy, and appeared last month for a breach of his probation order.
Carlsen was sentenced to six months' imprisonment, and ordered to make restitution.
