SHOPLIFTING.
THREE WOMEN CHARGED.
ADMISSION OF OFFENCES,
Charges of shoplifting were preferred against thre.e women in the Police Court this morning before Mr. VV. R. McKean, S.M., the accused in each case pleading guilty. Ellen Baker and Elizabeth Heron wcrc_ charged with a series of thefts, the value of the articles taken by the former totalling £1 9/5, and by Heron, £3 7/1. Senior Sergeant Hall stated that Baker had stolen a number of articles on the 18th and next day, in company with Heron, had stolen from other shops. When taken to the oftice of one shop they had attempted to conceal certain articles, while others were found in their possession. Mr. A. Moody said that both women were married with children. The magistrate said that it was not a case of yielding to sudden impulse, but deliberate stealing. He sentenced Baker to seven days' imprisonment on one charge, and twelve months' probation on the others. Heron was fined that Ruby Margaret Ormiston had attempted suicide when taken to the police headquarters, was revealed when she was charged, with stealing articles of clothing valued at £o from a city warehouse.
