EIGHTY FEET FALL.
MAN DROPS INTO RIVER. REGAINS BANK UNAIDED. (By TelegraphJ—own Correspondent.) HAWKHA, this day. To fall 80 feet into the Tangahoe River and to swim back afterwards was the remarkable achievement of Mr. Charles Salt, who is engaged in the con. struction of the new concrete bridge on the main road, four miles south of Hawera. He suffered general bruises and-an unexplained black eye and was ordered to bed to rest. Mr. Salt lost his footing on the scaffolding on the highest part of the work yesterday afternoon. He hunched himself up as he dropped and hit the water with his shoulders. Before his mates aroused themselves to take rescue measures Mr. Salt reappeared and swam to the bank, up which he was able to climb.
It was fortunate that the river, though Tiot wide, was in partial flood. Had the man's fall been ended by a straight dive the consequences could hardly have been so light.
