ELLERSLIE IMPROVEMENTS.
UNEMPLOYED'S APPRECIATION.
Appreciation of the Ellerslie Town board's- action in promoting a subsidised ;cheine of footpath construction, ,enabling:' workers to receive standard n ages over several months, was expressed' in- a' letter • received, at the board's meeting last night from the men who carried out- the work.
The clerk, Mr. J. W. Carr, and- the foreman] Mr. W. Shiels, in reporting on the work, stated that after 'completing the first 'schedule, which included 29 streets, there was a balance of £800 available from the £5000 loan raised for footpath construction. The scheme had been carries. out below f tlie' estimated amount. Ten miles and a half of concrete footpaths 4ft wide had been laid and the work had provided considerable employment for the unemployed men in the district. During the latter stages of the work every eligible unemployed man had been engaged.
It was decided to carry out similar work laid down in the second schedule of the scheme out of the balance of the loan money. The work of constructing footpaths over a length of 479 chains in the five remaining streets and roads in the Town Board district will commence immediately after the holidays.
Satisfaction with the financial position was expressed by members. During the current year £690 had been expended in wages and £264 in materials. There was. a balance of about £484 at the end of November, against the year's estimate of £1438.
