Complaint that damage was done on board H.M.S. Leith while she was lying at Gisborne wharf was made at a meeting of the Gisborne Borough Council. The sloop was visited by a particularly largo number of people on her linn Sunday at Gisborne and the visitors found much difficulty in moving about tlie ship because of the crowd congesting every available square inch ot dcc.v space, particularly in the corridors. The deputy-Mayor, Mr. H. Holmes, at tlie close of the council meeting, stated that during the visit of the Lcith certain damage liad been done on board tlie ship, paint and one of the guns having suffered, no doubt from irresponsible children not under proper control. He said that he had had a report to that effect unofficially, and he had been told that it was the first time that damage of that nature had ever been done on board the ship. Mr. H. H. De Costa interjected at this point, saying that the matter was not one for the council, but for the Harbour board. The deputy-Mayor "replied that the council was concerned in the matter. Mr. D. S. Thompson: You want to educate the public. Mr. Holmes said that his reason for bringing the matter up was to bring it before the notice of the public.
