SHORT OF STUDENTS
TRAINING COLLEGE.
MAY NOT FILL QUOTA,
"TEACHERS FRIGHTENED OFF"
With the period of application for admission to the Auckland Training College closed it docs not appear likely that the college quota of students, 175, will be filled. This position was disclosed at the meeting of the Auckland Education Board this morning when- a report was presented setting out the number of applications in each division. There was a total of 170, and it was stated that a number of these would probably not be eligible. It was pointed out that returns had not been received from Taranaki, Wellington or Hawke's Bay, lyit that it was . not likely .that the position would be altered. The quota for Auckland .would probably be 175, said Mr. D. W. Dunlop, secretary to the board, in making the report. Applications were as follow: — Division A (those who had passed Training College entrance examinaions): Men 53, women 74, total 127; division C (graduates): Men. 21, women 16, total 37; division A or C: Men 5, women 7, total 12. Total 176 (men 79, women 97). Low Salaries To Blame? A considerable number of these would be eliminated, said Mr. Dunlop, and there was no chance of filling the' quota from the applicants. "The difficulty, I think, has been the small salaries paid to teachers, combined with the reports of unemployment among teachers," said Mr. Dunlop. "It has frightened them off." Perhaps the Department would not now be so particular about refusing tho admission of students who were not 17 years old by a few months, suggested Mr. A. Burns. "We don't want to admit ■ immature students to the Training College 1 ," said Mr. T. U, Wells, who presided. A memorandum received from the Department at the meeting stated that tho Minister had approved the admission to training next year of 550 students to be allocated to Auckland and Canterbury Training Colleges. The Department advised further that, in view of the unqualified character of the Trainin" College regulations, applicants, who were less than 17 years of age by however short a period, were not eligible to be applicants for admission.
