THE FISHING SEASON.

WEATHER AFFECTS SPORT. ONE ROD SECURES 132 TROUT. fßy Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)

ROTORUA, this day.

In his report covering the first two weeks of the trout fishing season, the conservator of fish and game, Mr. A. Kean, states that the weather conditions were good for the opening morning of the season in the Rotorua district, but within 24 hours a change took place, and since then southerly and westerly winds have prevailed. Bay of Plenty rivers were discoloured and practically unflehable for the opening, and since then floods have taken place and anglers have had a very quiet time.

Reports from the Wairoa and Waikaremoana areas state that the weather conditions have been against good fishing, and few anglers have been out. Some large catches were taken in the Waikato, below the Aratiatia Rapids and in the vicinity of Fuljamee' camp, but the fish generally were not in the best of condition. Lake Tarawera fished exceptionally well, and the class of trout •taken were quite good, specimens up to Sib being taken on the spoon. Fly fishermen reported satisfactory catches, including several limits. Trolling parties on Lake Rotorua were very successful, and numbers of fine-conditioned young fish up to 31b were taken. Quite a number of rainbow, ranging between 01b and Sib, were taken in Rotorua, and one fiVh of 101b was secured in the Ngongotaha Stream.

Rotoiti fished exceedingly well for the beginning of the season, and some- good bags were secured both by trollers and fly fishermen. One trolling party took 24 fish during a day and a half, the average of the catch being 41b and the heaviest fish 6Jlb. Several 81b and 91b rainbow were taken on the fly in the west end of Rotoiti. Tho Ohau Channel wae carrying some very fine rainbow during the first week of the season, and specimens of good clean fish up to 81b were taken on the fly.

The report states that for several days prior to the opening of the season the weather conditions in the Taupo district were very rough and most of the rivers were discoloured on November 1. While a wind from the south and west, accompanied at times by heavy rain, made fishing difficult, there was a large -number of anglers in the district, and some good catches were reported.

One overseas fly fisherman accounted for 132 rainbow, taken from the Tongariro and the Waikato above the Huka Falls. This catch included three limits in the Tougariro and one at Pye's fishing lodge. Trolling parties had good sport both at the Tokaanu and Taupo ends of the lake on several days, and some large bags were made in the vicinity of °the Eangatira Point and Whanganiata Bay. Rainbow taken in the lake were in good condition, but the majority from the rivers entering the lake were only fair. The evening riee on the Waikato, above the Huka Falls, is well tip to the best seasons, and dry-fly anglers fishing above the falls have obtained excellent sport.
