REDUCED TO THREE.

MT. EDEN CLERKSHIP. ONE LOCAL APPLICANT. COUNCILLORS' CRITICISMS. "There is not a man in the nine applicants who could give Mount Eden the service we can get rrom our present clerk," said Mr. S. E. Chappcll, when the appointment of a town clerk for the Mount Eden borough was before the council last night. Of the original 50 applications the number had been reduced to nine and last night a further reduction was made to three. Two are men residing in the South and the third is a local applicant. As usual the matter gave rise to some discussion. Mr. E. R. Greenfield slid that while lie was not absolutely disappointed with the applicants he could not say he was delighted with them and he considered that the calling for applications at a time when there was unpleasant publicity had stopped some men from applying for the position. Thi» salary, £000, he considered not sufiicicnt to tempt good men. Mr. Greenfield moved that applications again be invited and the salary increased to £550, with increments offered for the future. Mr. W. J. G'atenby expressed the opinion that the name of Mr. H. Griljble, the present acting-town clerk, should have been included in the nine. Mr. McNal) said that to include Mr. Oribblo would only make the council look ridiculous. Mr. Chappell said that in his opinion there was not among the many applicants any one man, who, if appointed, would give the service required by the council. He moved that no applications be accepted. The motions were defeated as was also a motion by Mr. Gatenby that Mr. Gribble's name be included. After further discussion it was left to the Mayor, Mr. T. McNab, to interview the three applicants.
