FLOODS IN FRANCE.
Death and Destruction in Rhone Valley. RESCUE BOAT CAPSIZES. PARIS, November 14. The worst floods since 1840 have devastated an area of 150 miles in the Rhone Valley. The death roll is 15. Airmen and troops are carrying out rescue work in Provence, where hundreds of refugees await help on roof-tops. A rescue boat at Sorgues capsized and eight soldiers and three civilians were drowned. Hundreds of cattle have been drowned and many vineyards have been ruined. Damage is estimated at millions of pounds. The River Rhone is 25 feet above its normal level and is 11 miles wide in some places. It is rising four feet a day. Flood waters are swirling round the ancient ramparts of Avignon, one-third of which are submerged. Hundreds of citizens are domiciled in the Town Hall and other public buildings.
