OBITUARY.
MR. MATTHEW WALKER. The death occurred suddenly at his residence, of Mr. Matthew Walker, the known Auckland health specialist, in his sixty-eighth' year. Born at Kcmpecy, New Sonth Wales, Mr Walker trained to be a Presbyterian medical missionary, attending the Sydney University Medical College for three years, and for two years he was associated with the late Sir Neville. Howes in hospital work. He was actively engaged in medical missionary work in 3Ncw South Wales for many years, and was a popular lecturer as well as a prominent preacher. Mr. Walker was a close friend of the late Sir George Reid. For eight years he was stationed at Orange, New South Wales, and it was while on his way from there to accept a call to San Francisco that he called at Auckland and decided to'remain here. He thereupon established a health institute in Auckland, which he conducted for over 30 years. Ho was a popular lecturer in health matters, psychology, anti-vivisec-tion, and in various scientific subjects, and for many years was the president of the British Union of Anti-vivisection Society. He was also a prominent member of the Masonic Order. Mr. Walker's only surviving relative in New Zealand is his only daughter, Mrs. H. L. Fendall, of St. Helier's Bay, who trained for the nursing profession at the Auckland Hospital. Dr. D. B. Walker, M.8., 8.5., F.R.C.S., Eng., of Rockhampton, Queensland, who was a surgeon-major in the N.Z.M.C. during the Great War, is the only son of the deceased. MR. JOHN KNIGHT. At the age of 77 years, Mr. John Knight, the well-known sheep and cattle breeder of Matangi, Waikato, has died in Auckland. He was a former president of the Waikato Agricultural and Pastoral Association. Mr. Knight owned numerous racehorses, and did much to foster the game of polo, tournaments being frequently held on his farm. Some years ago Mr. Knight moved to Whangarei, where he was engaged in farming, and had lately been living in retirement in Auckland. He is survived by his widow and one daughter.
MRS. G. W. MORLEY. The death has occurred of Mrs. G. W. Morley, a member of a pioneer Auckland family. She was born at Papakura 74 years ago, and was the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Smollett Reid. When Mrs. Morley was only two years of age she was brought to Auckland with her family in a dray one night to escape a band of hostile natives. For over 50 years she was a member of the Edendale and Mount Eden Presbyterian Churches. She is survived by her husband, six sons, and one daughter. MR. W. G. DYER. The death has occurred at Hamilton of Mr. William George Dyer, of Ngaruawahia, at the age of 93 years. Mr. Dyer was born in Auckland when the city was in its early infancy. He followed the occupation of a shipbuilder, and was associated with the construction of the Prince Rupert and May Queen, vessels which traded between Auckland and Fiji for. many years. Later he was occupied as a contractor supplying timber to coal mines and shingles for houses in Auckland. Mr. Dyer fought in the Maori War, and took part in several engagements in the Waikato. He lived in Auckland, Pakiri (North Auckland), and Coromandel. For the last 20 years he had bcema resident of the Waikato. Hβ is survived by one son. MR. H. F. ALLEN. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. The death has occurred of Mr. H. F. Allen, for 19 years secretary of the Wellington Industrial Association. He was 75 years of age.
