RACING AT RICCARTON
THE SECOND DAY.
:lowenberg wins derby. OSCULATE THE PENDALTON. (By Telegraph.—Special to " Stair.") CHRISTCHURCH Monday. The Canterbury Jockey Club's sprinj meeting ■was continued at Riccarton to day, when Itho -weather was fine, bul overcast, and the track -was slow aftei rain overnight. The attendance -was good, and the totalisator handled £28,007, against £22,451 on the corresponding day last year, an increase oi £6456. The investments for the two days amount to £70,248, compared witl £58,773 on the first two days last year an increase of £11,475. Latitude was the only scratching foi the Middleton Handicap. The Surgeor and Weatherley led Hunting Bag, Taumav and Ufocturnus all the way to the straight. Weatherley then retired, while Padishah; Jolly Beggar and Wonderful moved, up Hunting Bag headed The Surgeon a littlt further on, but Padishah shot out a furlong from the post, -winning easily. Wonderful finished fast to cut Surgeon out of second place, Hunting Bag being close up, and Jolly Beggar next. Wonder ful's effort was a good one after beginning badly. Padishah, however, won as h< liked. He is a half-brother by ChieJ Ruler to the Cup -winner Cuddle, anc looks a likely 6ort. Paper Slipper ibegan fast in the Irwell Handicap, and led all the way, winning easily. Daring Deed, Document and Studley Royal followed the winner to the course proper, where Sunbeam came with a late run, beating Dawning Light by a neck for second place. Document Studley Royal and Double Gift were next. Paper Slipper is exceptional brilliant. Sunbeam is a well grown colt and wDI improve. Document showed speed, but was tiring at the finish. A field of 21 contested the Strowar Plate, a race for maidens, run over 6is furlongs. Paladino began smartly, leading Miracle. Riposte, Culotte and Going Gaj for half a mile. Paladino started to tire a furlong from "home, and Going Gaj finished fast, winning easily, while Doctoi Duthie came with a late run to beal Miracle on the post for second place Paladino and Riposte were next, and ther. came Rival Shot, Roaming and Jewisl Lad. The winner, who is engaged in th« Oaks, gained her first success in impres-
Hemmed In. The New Zealand Derby witnessed the defeat of Kinnoull,- a raging win favourite. Greek Shepherd led for three furlongs, when Plato headed him, Kinnoull being next, then Lowenberg and Heritage. After six furlongs Rompalong moved up' fast from th,e back, joining Greek Shepherd and Plato in front at the home turn,, where Kinnoull was next. They ran' like this to the straight, where Lowenberg and Heritage moved up, going, past Kjnnoull, who ■ was thus left with a line of horses in front of him. His rider made an attempt to find an opening before moving to the outside, but by this time less than a furlong remained. Plato and Rompalong weakened, leaving Greek ■Shepherd, Lowenberg and Heritage in front. Kinnoull came home very fast, but too late. Lowenberg stayed on best of the other three, beating.Greek Shepherd by a neck, -with Heritage a neck away, and Kinnoull a head further back. Lowenberg nvuet be given, credit for a good performance, but it certainly looked as if Kinnoull was beaten 'because A. E. Ellis did not realise the pace was slow early, and a stayer like Kinnoull could have afforded to force things quite early. Quite apart from this EHis did not show the best judgment- after the straight was reached. — Great Star set the pace in the Criterion. Handicap, Silver Streak, Cranford and Rebel Chief following him to the straight, •where they had a bunch in close attendance. Sea Fox then shot out, taking the lead a furlong from the post, and winning easily. Davolo was also going well at this stage, but Variant and Silver Ring came with a late run, Variant gaming second place by a neck from Silver Ring, who was making hie first appearance since his return from* Australia. Davolo, Cranford and Great Star were next, and Fair Weather and Rebel Chief were last. Sea Fox appreciated the sting out of the ground, and his performance -was impreseive. Silver Ring carried His big weight in great style, and his ■ turn may come soon. Finished Strongly., < When the Fendalton -Handicap field settled down Quite " Soon was showing the way to Quietly and Kiltowyn, with Osculate and Golden ' King next, Sunee being last. There' was little change to the straight, where Walton Park joined in. Quite Soon then retired, and Osculate came through.' with. - a fine run on the rails, winning by two lengths. In a great finish for places Walton Park beat the fast-finishing Tout le. Monde 'by a neck, with Quietly a head. away. Golden King was close up, but Kiltowyn faded out in disappointing fashion when the straight was reached. Osculate ran a solid race in the New Zealand Cup for over a mile and a half, so hie form was consistent. Moonbeam, Beau Gallante and Sisterina were slow to begin in the Randolph Handicap. Land Raid and Invoice soon drew clear, with Kotou, Tail Light and Half Note .next. Tail Light retired at the home turn, where Golden Dart and Mount Val joined in, with Beau Gallante also handy. Riptide, after being, a long way back, was with the first division a furlong from the post, and he won by a neck from Half Note, with Mount Val a length away, Land Raid fading to fourth in the last few strides. Invoice", Ayresleigh, Beau Gallante. Acceptable and Kotou were next. Beau Gallante put up a fine effort to be with the leaders at the distance, but his effort to get there settled him after his slow jump out. Riptide's performance was very impressive, after being Tiear the tail of the field at the half'mile post. . Bun FicM set a strong- -pace in the Kpsom Imperial Spear and Dollar Prince following early, but Dollar Prince lost his place after two furlongs, Imperial Rpeiir, Hunting Cat and Tunneller following Bun Fight to the ■straight, where Superex started to move up, while Dollar Prince also made a fast run. In tire final furlong Bun Fight tired, and Tunneller took charge, stalling _ off Superex by a short head. Dollar Prince was close up, finishing well, with Bun Fight, Courtyard, Haut Monde and Hunting Cat next. Tunneller has shown promising form several times lately.
