MONEY POWER.
INDEPENDENT LIBERAL
MR. PICKERING'S CAMPAIGN.
Between 50 and CO people attended the Centenary Hall, Dominion Road, last evening, to hear the opening address of Mr. C. W. 11. Pickering, Independent Liberal candidate for Eden. Mr. T. McNab, Mayor of Mount Eden, presided. In introducing the candidate, he said Mr. Pickering was a New Zsalander. He was in Brazil when the Great War commenced, and had immediately enlisted with a Scottish regiment, ami had come back to the Dominion when demobolised. Ho was a lay reader in the Church of England. Mr. Pickering said that all the Christian and liumano legislation that had. been placed in the New Zealand Statute Book was put there by Liberal Administrations, and that was the reason for him standing as a Liberal. He mentioned the work done for New Zealand by Ballance, Scddon and Ward. On account of the defects in the party system ho preferred to be an Independent. Large sums of money were placed in party funds, but it was obvious that it was not contributed for philanthropic purposes. Unless a now system of Christian economics was introduced into the Dominion the country 'would soon be firmly under the heel of a "money power dictatorship."
The candidate devoted most of his address to an exposition of hign finance, advocating Douglas Credit as a practical application to the Christ. Any economic system based on the law of supply and demand, lie said, was "bosh." The proper system was one based oil supply and requirements. Until the people had tho necessary purchasing power in their pockets nobody would know their requirements. If the banks could use the; credit of the nation surely the people could use their own credit for their own benefit. Anything that was physically possible was'finan" cially possible.
Mr, Pickering condemned the banking system, and spoke of tlio velocity of money. He took his audience on a tour of Europe, describing international bankers as aliens who had practically every country in their grip. Japan and Ethiopia were the only two Governments to escape their control. That was the reason for the efforts that were made to induce hatred for Japan. Mussolini could not stop the war even if he wanted to, declared the candidate, because he was controlled by an alien international money crowd. A vote of thanks and confidcnce was accorded the candidate.
