DEMOCRATS AND LABOUR.
"R.H.G." in his letter in last Friday's "Stai*" merely discovers another mare's nest. He affects to see serious disagreement between my statement as Democrat candidate for Kaipara that I would vote for any motion to displace the present Government as compared with, the statement of the Democrat leader that instead of voting for a Labour noconfidence motion against the Government he would move an amendment and / , cause the Labour party to vote with the' Democrats. Now if the Democrats were the stronger opposition party it would first move a no T confidence motion against the Government. Then Labour could move an amendment and the Democrats would have to vote with Labour against -the Government. The result would be the same; tlie differences of procedure being mere technicalities. In effect, therefore, there is no lack of unity of purpose between the leader and myself, and "R.H.G." must bear with fortitude the ruin of his pious hope that his discovery causes, as ho would wish, the "real reason for the existence" of the Democrat party to vanish. It is gratifying to us to find that even one who is evidently yearning to attend our funeral cannot find any more promising ailment in our party than this difference of tweedledum and tweedledee.
