SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING. LETTER FROM MINISTER. The possibility of receiving assistance from the Government towards the work of carrying on the Auckland University College School of Engineering next year was mentioned at a meeting of the council yesterday afternoon.
The Minister of Education, Mr. Smith, wrote stating that the additional grant given to the Auckland University College for the year 1934-35 was subject to the School of Engineering being closed, or alternatively the College Council finding by voluntary effort the money to carry it on.
The Minister eaid that a previous letter advising the Cabinet that in view of all the circumstances the Engineering School should be continued for a further twelve months was not intended as an indication that the Government would find the necessary money for carrying on, but the condition attached to the additional grant was waived for another year. The question of a further grant for the School of Engineering was under consideration in connection with the Supplementary Estimates, but lie was unable to promise that the amount asked for would be voted.
It was decided that the chairman, Mr. T. U. Wells, and the registrar, Mr. M. R. O'Shea, should interview the Minister during their visit to Wellington this week.
