MAJORITY OF UNEMPLOYED. BISHOP'S HIGH TRIBUTE. (By Telegraph.;— Own Correspondent.) DUNEDIN, this day. In his presidential address at the opening of the Anglican Synod, Bishop Fitchett, referring to the unemployed, said that much had been said atid written about instances of ingratitude, extravagance, wastefulness,- laziness and ■the wrong spirit on the part of some of those who were assisted, and that there were such instances was doubtless true. He said, hnwever, that it had been his personal experience that in the great majority of cases there was such a spirit of patient endurance, of gratitude and of a desire to make the 'best of their misfortunes and to bear them cheerfully that he had felt it an honour to he associated with people of such strength of character.
"If there be some who expect too much, it is also true that among _ the well-to-do there are some who have given too little," he said. "What is most to he desired is that all should have the opportunity of work and of earning a •just reward for their labours, and it is our duty to prepare ourselves for such changes in social and economic conditions as may be found necessary to achieve that end."
