"SMITHY " ILL.
Severe Chill Postpones New Flight. MAY START WEDNESDAY. (Received 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, October 20. Sir Charles Kingsford Smith and his co-pilot, Mr. TV Pethybridge, slept last night at Croydon aerodrome in readiness to start early to-day on their flight to Australia, but Sir Charles became ill during the night. In spite of attention, it soon became clear that he would not be fit to fly. A doctor stated that "Smithy" was suffering from a severe chill and he was ordered to remain in bed at the aerodrome hotel. It is hoped that if his temperature returns to normal, he will be able to start the flight about Wednesday. The restrictions on his petrol load enforced by the Air Ministry will necessitate a landing at Marseilles, and at similar distances en route, so that the airmen now intend to make a quick, but not a record, flight. The authorities in Washington have agreed to the British Air Ministry's request, on behalf of Sir Charles, for a permit for the employment of a racing Wasp engine, and a total weight of 52001b. This is subject to conformation with certain technical requirements.
