DOUBTFUL PROMISE.
OTAGO FRUIT CROPS. RAIN BADLY NEEDED. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") DUNEDIN, this day. Fruit crops in Central Otago have shown a decided •improvement during the past 10 days, but there still remains some anxiety about late frosts and the present extremely dry nature of the soil. Growth in apple and pear orchards has been more encouraging during the last week, and at present indications are for bumper yields around Alexandra and Cromwell districts. Stone fruits are improving after their setback by unseasonably heavy frosts three weeks ago. Everywhere there is prayer for rain. It has been an unusually dry season, and unless a downpour gives fruit lands a thorough saturation before very long serious consequences—perhaps more damaging than frosts—will be expected.
