CAULFIELD CUP.
PALFRESCO BEATS HOT SHOT.
VICTORY IN RECORD TIME. GAY CIRCLE WINS THE BUKWOOD. MELBOURNE, October 20. An Australian and New Zealand record of 2.27% for a mile and a,half was established by the three-year-old Palfreeco in winning the Caulfield Cup at the Victoria Amateur Turf Club's meeting, which was concluded at Caulfield yesterday in fine weather and before an. enormous attendance. Palfreeco made a remarkable effort. He was on the extreme outside of 24 at the barrier, and was in front of only five horses a mile from home. He moved up from the sixJurlong post and took charge below the distance. Palfresco was bred by Mr. S. Green, and is held on lease by Mr. S. Kent. He showed moderate form early this season, but commanded support during the week following brilliant track wox-k. His sire, Son o' Mine," was imported from England, and was third in the Melbourne Cup in 1027. Hot Shot finished gamely for second and Marabou recorded a good effort. Marabou did not have the best of luck in the running. Charles Fox failed to stay. Sarcherie was a close fourth. Journal and Feldspar went good races. Panto and Oro were disappointing. Allunga was withdrawn at 1.5 p.m. The Wyuna Steeplechase was a chapter of accidents, seven of the fifteen starters failing to complete the course. The veteran Wirrate led throughout. He ie owned and trained by the ex-New Zealander Vin O'Neill, who won the Melbourne Cup with Spearfelt in 1926. The New Zealander Gay Circle, owned by Mr. G. J. Barton, of Dunedin, led for the last seven furlonge of the Burwood Handicap, winning by half a neck in an interesting finish. Link Divine was a solidly supported favourite, but she tired and missed a place. Although hampered by Genoa running in toward her a t the finish, Fidelity scored a brilliant win in the Mona Nursery. She ie owned by Sir Colin Stephen, chairman of 'the Australian Jockey Club, and thie was her first start. Arabian Knight led always to gain a comfortable win in the Gwyn Nursery from Royal Jubilee and Borneo, who finished strongly.. The winner ie a fullbrother to Carnarvon, s and cost 300ge as a yearling. , Dark Sky finished with a brilliant run to narrowly win the Windsor Handicap, in which Red Manfred, having his first race in Australia, and Araunah were the last two home. Red Manfred looked big, and should do better later. E. Meredith received a broken collarbone as a result of hie fall.from Prince Comedy in the Wyuna Steeplechase. The other riders to have falb in the race escaped serious injury. Results:—
