TWO SURPRISES.
EDUCATION BOARD. TEACHER ALSO PUBLICAN. SCARCITY OF ASSISTANTS. The Auckland Education Board was surprised to-day to learn that one of its teachers was also the - licensee of an hotel. It was stated that the board had agreed to allow the teacher, who was on the eve of his retirement, to continue to the end of the year and that he, not coining under tho superannuation scheme, made provision for his old age by purchasing the hotel. Owing to an earlier move than he had expected by the outgoing licensee the teacher had had to take possession of the hotel, which was being carried 011 by his wife while he continued his teaching duties. As the board would havd been obliged to give him three months' notice and he was to retire in December in any case, there was nothing the board could do about it.
Another surprise was the fact that there were only three applicants for a grade 2 assistant mistress' position in the intermediate department of a school in a country centre. "They seem to shy clear of mathematics and French," was the explanation given to the board.
