GOOD NEWS REACHES WAIH
MINERS RECOMMENCING WORK,
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
WAIHI, this day.
Information which came through last evening stilting that a settlement of tho Waihi mining strike had been effected was received with expressions of satisfaction by all concerned. It had been recognised that a serious dislocation of tlio mining industry here, especially at this period of tho year, would have practically ruined tho town and brought much suffering to tho miners and their families as well as proving a severe blow to business generally.
As the result of the good news a section of tho workers, including engine drivers, shaftsmen, pumpmen and others, went on shift this morning preparatory to resuming general operations at midnight to-night. Ihe nino horses will be taken underground again to-day, and rock drills and other mining gear which had been lemoved just prior to tho commencement of the strike will bo replaced.
Altogether the town has suddenly undergone a wonderful changc as compared with the depressed feeling which hnil existed since Tuesday week last, and now cheerfulness and optimism prevail.
The delegates who represented the union and sub-unions at the Auckland conference are due to return this afternoon, and a mass meeting of the men will be held this evening when a report of the proceedings and tho terms of settlement will be submitted by the president, Mr. E. Dye.
