MILITARY FUNERAL.

PERIVIANENT INSTRUCTOR.

THE LATE MR. CALWELL,

With full military honours tho funeral of Mr. J. L. D. Cahvell, who met his death on Saturday morning when a motor cycle he was riding collided with a telegraph pole in Jcrvois Road, took place at Waikumcte Cemetery yesterday afternoon. Mr. Calwell was a New Zealand Permanent Staff instructor, and a son of Senior Sergeant and Mrs. D, L. Calwell, of Christchurch.

A brief service was conducted by the Rev. E. T. Olds at the Pitt Street Methodist Church, after which the cortego proceeded to Waikumcto. The remains were borne on a gun carriage which was preceded by a firing party from tho Royal New Zealand Artillery. I'n top of the coflin, over which a Union Jack was draped, were Mr. Calwell's cap and side arms. The pallbearers were members of the New Zealand Permanent Staff.

Colonel J. E. Duigan. Officer Commanding the Northern Command, was represented by Major D. IT. Donaldson. Members of the New Zealand Staff Corps present were Major D. H. McHugh, Captain C. Dittmer and Captain R. S. Judson, V.C. The funeral was also attended by members of the Royal New Zealand Air Force and the territorials. Members of the police who attended included Sub-Inspector J. Sweeney, Senior Serjeant jr. Flanagan and Sergeants Dun ford, Felton, Isseli and Brown.

At the graveside tlie service was conducted by Mr. Olds, and three volleys "•ere fired by the firing-party. A bugler sounded the "Last Post" arid the "Reveille."
