IMPROVED TRADING, (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Following yesterday's duil business there was better activity at this morning's call, when a good range of issues was dealt in. A parcel of 1940 Government bonds changed hands at 5/ less than the last sale over a month ago. The Government section as a whole was steady at lato rates. Commercial Banks continued active, with a fractional rise. The preference issue improved, with buyers at £9 12/ and sellers at £9 14/0. Nationals of New Zealand had quotations closer together, with buyers at £3 11/ and sellers at £3 12/3. Bank of New Zealand weakened, with reported business to £2 9/9. Insurances were dull, the only quotations being sellers' limits of £4 12/6 for South British and £3 8/ for Standards. Among miscellaneous issues Broken Hills rose 2d, with "rights" firm. Australian Iron and Steel were slightly stronger from £1 4/6 buyers to £1 5/ sellers. Woolworths (N.Z.) sold at five guineas, and had further buyers 1/ below, and no sellers. Mining shares were quiet. Ivildare had the only business. Mount Lyells and ; Rawang were firm at late rates. I

PUKEKOHE, Monday. Supplies of new potatoes have been improving steadily during the past week, and despite a bad season for earlies, the quality is extremely good. There is a ready demand -at from £1 6/6 to £17/ per cwt, this representing a decrease of 1/ on last week's quotations. A faildemand is. offering for Southern potatoes, but supplies are short, and values, although fair, are at a high level. Red Dakotas selling at from £19 to £19 10/ per toil. American onions are in rather weak demand, due mainly to tile high prices ruling at present, merchants quoting £1 5/ per 1001b gunny. Supplies are limited. Supplies of cabbages and cauliflowers have shown a further increase, and large quantities are coming forward each day. However, the demand has eased off now, owing to crops in Southern districts being ready for the market, and prices have dropped about 2/6 per large sack in sympathy. All-heart cabbages are bringing 5/6 per large sack; Enfield Market, 4/3; cauliflower, 7/ per large sack and 5/3 for threequarter size; carrots, 4/6 per sugar bag; parsnips, 6/; rhubarb, 3/3 per dozen bundles; lettuce, 4/6 per banana case; Island kumaras, 16/6 per cwt. Onion plants are selling at 3/ per 1000 for straw and longkeepers; cabbage plants, 7/6 per 1000; cauliflower plants, 10/ per 1000; tomato plants, 3/6 per box of 50.
