GRAIN AND PRODUCE.

POTATOES ARE CHEAPER. AUSTRALIAN WHEAT ARRIVES. MAIZE IS DEARER. Tile gradual influx of new season's potatoes is having an effect on tlie demand for southern, and as a consequence values are lower by from 1/ to 2/ per cwt. Merchants are now asking 17/6 a cwt, but business is quieter than it was. There are fair stocks on hand. The demand for onions is quiet, largely due to the high prices still ruling, namely, 25/ per 1001b bag.

Bran is still in keen demand and short supply. Pollard is coming to hand from Australia and any interference with steamer connections would be very inconvenient to stock feeders, as merchants do not carry heavy supplies, depending upon the usually regular service. Prices are unchanged from last week. Fowl wheat is now coming to hand from Australia under special license through, the Wheat Board, and merchants are quoting the new line at 5/6 per bushel, through store, which is Id cheaper than the price ruling lately for southern. Maize is very firm. Neither from the Bay of Plenty nor from Gisborne can supplies be freely obtained. The local price has been further advanced to 5/1 per bushel, which places it practically on a parity with wheat. The advent of warmer weather invariably lessens the demand for this cereal, and business, which up till now has been brisk, may be expected to decline. In summer time, other things being equal, most poultry keepers prefer to feed wheat rather than maize. Wholesale Current Prices. Pollard and Bran. —Mill prices: Pollard, £7 per ton; bran, £6 per ton. Merchants' prices: Pollard, local, £7 5/ per ton; Australian, £7 15/; bran, £0 10/.
