"WILL PETER OUT."
ART UNIONS IN N.Z.
OPINION OF MINISTER
PROFITS SHOW DECLINE.
(By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.)
WELLINGTON, this day
"It is only a matter of time in my opinion when art unions will peter out," said. Sir Alexander Young, Minister of Internal Affairs, when replying this morning to a request from the Dominion executive of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for a share of the proceeds of an art union.
The Minister said he could give 110 promise that the federation would receive substantial assistance from an art union owing to the present state of art union proceeds. The profits had fallen from £14,000 to below £>000. He had been given a statement last, week of the last art union that was drawn and the profit was only £4303. lie had been giving all funds from ait unions for the relief of distress, but the profits had been steadily declining.
The Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Macmillan, said lie wondered whether the reason for the declind in the proneeds of art unions was due to the people thinking that tho proceeds ought to be distributed over a wider field than the relief of distress.
