TAKANINI TRIALS.
ANION GOES WELL. NUN NICER'S GOOD SIX. . The middle grass, with the poles 10ft out, was in use this morning, the going being in quite good order despite recent rain. The Lapidary—Spandona filly (Pell) opened proceedings by running two furlongs down the back in 255. Anion (Stratton) and Red Hawk (Taylor) were partners in a half-mile sprint, Anion going right away from his companion at the finish in 51 3-5s —an excellent effort. Ballymoney (Murphy) had a clear length's advantage over Glenacre (Taylor) at the conclusion of six furlongs iiL 1.19 2-5, both horses slowing up at the finish after going fast over the early stages, where they ran their first three furlongs in 38s. Nun Nicer (Inglis) and Flood Tide (Stratton) completed six furlongs in 1.18 3-5, the former being half a length in front at the finish. The last three furlongs- were run much faster than the first three, which took 40 2-ss.
Engi (Fearn) worked over a mile and a half, the pace being increased over the last mile, which took 1.49, the last halfmile being traversed in 54 3-ss. Engi has been working attractively, and is a very fit gelding. It has not been definitely decided as to who will be his pilot in the Mitchelson Cup. Needful (Taylor) and Ebb and Flow (Pell) were allotted an easy seven furlongs, which occupied 1.39, the former impressing most. Surclla was trotted a couple of rounds, and is recovering from his soreness, but it is doubtful if lie will be a runner at the meeting. Huskie (Fearn) and Dark Marble (Lee) were worked over a mile and a quarter, increasing the pace over the last mile, which was traversed in 1.52 2-5. Hikutaia (Howard) went a useful mile gallop in 1.50 4-5, after running his first half-mile in 555. This gelding has been showing improved track work during the last week. High Quality showed his usual dash in a sprint over five furlongs, which occupied 1.5 2-5. after running his first two in 265. He worked well. Merry Lap (Mcllroy) gave a good exhibition over four hurdles, as did Carlaris (W. Rennie)''. and Greek Gold (P. Mcllroy), while, accomplishing a similar task.
