TRACK GALLOPS.

THIS MORNING’S WORK. SOME SMART SPRINTS. GAY DEFENCE SETS THE MAIN. Weather conditions were ideal for training operations at Ellerslie this morning, and some interesting work took place. The course proper, on which the poles were 55ft out, was available, and provided fairly good going. Several fast sprints were recorded, the best efforts of the morning being those of Gay Defence and Plato.

Heritage opened proceedings by traversing six furlongs in 1.21. He ran the first three in 3!) 3-ss, and was doing it solidly at the finish. Tidalia finished in front of On Parade at the conclusion of six furlongs, which occupied 1.23 1-5, the first three taking 41 3-ss. On Parade was not unduly bustled. Haut Monde, after going away slowly from the seven-furlong post, and taking 15 2-5 s for the first furlong, ran home .n 1.35 2-5. Pasha and Etcetera reeled off five furlongs in 1.7. They ran the first two in 25 l-ss. Etcetera impressed most. Zane they was allotted a mile and

a half, running the last round in 2.25 2-5, and the final six furlongs in 1.31. Tybalt worked over a mile and a quarter, and was timed to register 2.17 1-5 for the last round. Sir Romeo assisted him over the last seven furlongs in 1.40 2-5. Tybalt could have reduced his time considerably. Kelly jumped off at the mile post, and after running the first half in 51 3-ss, completed the full distance in 1.45 1-5. He was doing his work comfortably at the finish. Te Broney and Royal Broney got to the end of six furlongs in 1.22, while Gay Broney registered 1.20 1-5 for a similar distance. He went away from the seven-furlong post, and was some lengths away from the above pair at the six furlongs, but finished right up with them.

Caliente, Gay Marigold and Senior were companions over a mile. They ran the first two furlongs in 25 l-ss, four in 52 l-ss, and completed their task in 1.47. Caliente and Gay Marigold did their work well, and were a couple of lengths in front at the post. The two-year-old Queen Brierly and Vera Acre ran home from the half-mile post in 53 3-ss. ’ Queen Brierly, who was on the outer, went attractively. After running their first two furlongs in 25 2-5 s Fleetwind and Solas got to the end of live furlongs in I.G 4-5. It was the best of the morning over the distance, and Fleetwind was going the better at the end, though Solas shaped pleasingly. Gay Defence and Plato were responsible for a smart effort oyer six furlongs. They ran the first three in 38s, and the full distance in 1.19 2-5. Gay Defence was in front, but Plato •could have been closer. Over a similar distance Psychologist registered 1.19 4-5, after taking 38 2-5 s for the first three furlongs. Tray Bit and King Mestor were on terms at the end of six furlongs in 1.20 3-5, the first three occupying 40s. Kiltowyn worked over a round in 2.9 1-5. He ran the last seven in 1.34 1-5, and the final half-mile in 53 l-ss. He finished full of running. Gemland sprinted half a mile in 53 2-ss, and Vanners took 55 l-ss. Green Patch and Catoma were associated over a round, which took 2.14 2-5, the last seven furlongs occupying 1.39 1-5, with Green Patch holding a slight advantage at the end. Capella Abbey covered the same ground in 2.18 2-5, the last seven furlongs in 1.40. No. 3 Grass. Armacourt and Jewelled Girdle were timed to run six furlongs in 1.15 3-5. Armacourt was several lengths ahead at the finish, but Jewelled Girdle was inclined to loaf over the last furlong. Impasto and Royal Appellant also did useful tasks on this track. The Jumpers. Hawthorn (Turvey) cleared a couple of hurdles in the centre in satisfactory style. He afterwards ran seven_ furlongs on the course proper in 1.42 3-5. Alantus (Stanway) was sent over the big fences on the flat, and got through his task safely. ARRIVALS. The Wanganui trainer W. Rayner arrived at Ellerslie this morning with Spiral, Moquette, Entail and Rust, who claim engagements at the Auckland meeting.

TAKANINI TRACK.

FLOOD TIDE’S GOOD SIX. ANION ALSO PLEASES. The middle grass, with the poles 6ft out, was in excellent order for fast work this morning. Greek Gold (McElroy), with Nun Nicer (Inglis) over the last seven furlongs, completed a mile in 1.48, Nun Nicer doing the better of the pair at the finish. Master Rex (Fearn) defeated King Flight (Lee) by half a length in a three-furlong sprint placed behind in 38s. Engi worked over a mile and a quarter, the pace being increased over the last mile, where he was joined by Dark Marble, who, however, was not much use to him, and he concluded the task in 1.46, with Dark Marble beaten off. He ran his first three furlongs jn 425, and the first five in 1.7 3-5. Hikutaia was allotted a similar task, his last mile taking 1.47 3-5. He went fast over the early stages, running his first two furlongs in 255, four in 50 3-ss, and five in 1.4. This was easily Hikutaia’s best effort this season. Flood Tide had a length’s advantage over Glenacre at the conclusion of six furlongs in 1.16. It was the best of the morning over the distance and was a good effort on the part of botli horses. Ballymoney worked jlazily over the same ground in 1.19 3-5. Anion and Red Hawk were partnered ov.er half, a mile, the former getting slightly the better of the start and finishing three lengths in front in 50 2-ss. Needful gave Ebb and Flow two lengths’ start at the five-furlong post and was a length in front at the finish in 1.4 2-5.

ENGLISH RACING.

When the last available mail left England a great deal of interest was being taken in the winning records for the season in various departments. Up to August 12 Gordon Richards had ridden 134 winners and a good contest was in progress for second among 11. Wragg 59, R. Perryman 58, and T. Weston 57. Last season Richards had 212 wins and in 1933 he established the record of 259. Frank Butters, was the leading trainer with 33 wins worth £39,762. followed by C. Leader, 29 wins, worth £24.095; J. Lawson, 19 wins, worth £19,588; H. L. Cottrill, 36 wins, worth £15,984; and F. Darling, 28 wins, worth £15,600. The Aga Khan headed the owners’ list with 15 wins of the value of £32,734. Sir Abe Bailey was second with 17 wins of the value of £16,767, Lord Derby third with 17 wins of the value of £11,692, and Mr. M. H. Benson fourth with seven wins of the value of £11,404. Only two horses had won prize money running into five figures, these being Bahram, £21,785, and Windsor Lad £10,689. The two-year-old Bossover colt was third with £8445. Blandford easily dominated the list of winning sires, seven of his progenv 15 o ra . ces o£ thc value Of ±40,287.
