THE ETERNAL FEMININE.
" All Xcw Zealand giiis want to got married, but they camouflage their feelings because they cannot get the men. Indian girls are frank about the fact that their aspiration is marriage."—Miss Florence Saker, Calcutta, in the course of an address on India, at Tnvercargill. After nil, tliis marriage business, .Tust concerns the man and maid. Why bnrge in with copious comment? Kude, I'm very much afraid; I shall not advise a daughter. Spinster, aunt—or anyone, Why ? Because In upper circles. This at least is never done. Do young spinsters hunt young bachelors, Do thy seek the fond caress. Do they pine for double harness, Or for single blessedness? Do they sigli ami blush and simper, As they did in eighty-one, Not. I take it, just at present. 'Cos of course it is not done. Does the modern maid, with mirror. Lipstick, powder and a " perm," Lure the unattached young fellow With a matrimonial worm? Is she, is she a Diana, -Huntress out with bow for fun, Shooting arrows a la cupid, Never! For it is not done. Matron, mater, mum and mamma, You've experience—tell us some, Can a girl inveigle menkind, Wth her wiles—tho' she keep dumb? Does the modern technique differ, Is aught new beneath the sun, Tell us how you lured the pater, Tell us all how it was done. Mother Nature never varies. And her pupils changeless stay. She arranges all the matches. New ones, everywhere, all day; Set sweet words to sweeter music. In all lands beneath the sun, Leave it to the dear old party, She will show you how it's done. —C.J.
