In 27 States.

PARTIES UNYIELDING.

WASHINGTON, September 24,

Four hundred thousand bituminous coal miners in 27 States were idle yesterday owing to the prolonged negotiations between the unions and the mine owners having reached a deadlock. A striko was called at the last minute.

All the differences between the parties had been settled excepting the rate of pay for piecc mining. The demands of the union were only li cents a. ton in excess of the owners' offer. However, beyond that neither side was willing to go.

Tho negotiations will be continued under the direction of the Department of Labour, in the hope of settling the striko before a fuel shortage is felt. On the first day of the strike no disorders were reported.

A meeting between the owners and representatives of tho union was adjourned until to-day. Mr. Edward McGrady, Assistant Secretary of Labour, says he is still hopeful of an early agreement being reached.
