'QUAKE RECORDED.
NAPIER SHOCKS EXCEEDED. SYDNEY, September 20. A violent earthquake is believed to have occurred in northern New Guinea, 2150 miles north-north-west of Sydney. Officials of the Riverview Observatory report that the shocks, which began at 11.53 a.m., were more pronounced than those of the Napier calamity of 1931. It is interesting in the light of the above cable to give the following seisrnological forecast, issued by Mr. L. C. Chatfield, Tuai, Waikaremoana, on September 2:—The next seisrnological period will be the 12th and 13th of September, 1935, G.m.t. and N.Z.m.t. respectively, latitude 31 to 40 degrees; New Zealand, magnitude 3 to 5 r.f. The geysers at Rotorua should show Increased activity. The intensity should be greater in the trophies, 4 to 6 r.f., especially Peru to Columbia, New Guinea, amt volcanic activity in the East Indies. Extra precautions against ignition of gas in coal mines should be taken. There should be no further important activity during this month.
LINKED IN MARRIAGE
TWO FAMOUS FAMILIES.
LONDON, September 20
Two famous political and newspaper families—the Birkenlieads and the Camroses —are to be linked in marriage again. The engagement is announced of the Hon. William Michael Berry, second son of Lord Camrose, formerly Mr. W. E. Berry, to Lady Pamela Smith, younger daughter of the late Earl of Birkenhead.
The present Lord Birkenhead, Lady Pamela's brother, is married- to the Hon. Sheila Berry, sister of the Hon. Michael. Although Lady Pamela is only 21 years old, she is a novelist and a recognised authority on circus and gipsy customs.
Lord Camrose is editor-in-chief of the "Daily Telegraph" and the "Sunday Times." He owned and edited various other journals, and has written exclusively for the publication with which he is associated. He is joint proprietor of the "Daily Telegraph," chairman of Allied Newspapers, Ltd., the "Financial Times," Ltd., Amalgamated Press, Ltd., and "Kelly's Directory," Ltd.
