MARKING TIME.

LULL AT GENEVA

Disputants Consider League

Proposals,

SOME TIME NECESSARY.

(British Official Wireless.)

(Received 12.30 p.m.)

RUGBY, September 20

No further progress in the League's efforts to solve the Halo-Abyssinian dispute can be made until the receipt of the comments of the two Governments upon the reports of the Council Committee of Five.

When presenting its report to the disputants, Scnor Madariaga requested that the replies should be delivered as quickl}' as possible, it is appreciated in Geneva that some time is necessary for their preparation, and the Italian reply in any case is not expected till after important meetings which arc due to be held in Rome to-morrow.

Meantime the principal delegates remain in touch to consider the possibilities of the situation. Conversations were held twice to-day between Mr Eden and M. Laval, who is returning to Paris for a meeting of the French Cabinet.

A Paris message says that according to "L'lntransigeant" Geneva correspondent Mr. Anthony Eden has informed M. Laval that the British Government regards the League's proposals as "the extreme limit" of the concessions possible to Italy and as the League's "last word."

If Italy rejected, tho proposals the League would have 110 alternative but to discuss sanctions.
