STABLE MONEY.

Now that a small measure of relief lias been given to civil servants by way of part restoration of the cuts all sorts of people and organisations are discussing the benefits which, will accrue from the greater measure of purchasing power. Unless .such sentiments as these arc backed up by genuine efforts to stabilise the purchasing power of wages they become platitudinous and consequently tend to mislead. During the past two years prices of many necessitous commodities have increased alarmingly (e.g., sugar 40 per cent, bacon 80 per cent). If prices rise in this fashion, at a time when there lias been no general rise in the working man's income, may we not expect increases on a wider scale subsequent to the restoration of cuts? I desire to appeal strongly to those with a national outlook to seek means whereby money may be made sufficiently stable as to prevent flucr tuations of such a nature, for., those who sudor most are the people who have been referred to as the backbone of the nation -the wage-earners'- with families. I do not believe that a, change of Government would necessarily correct the evil. On the other hand, adjustment of the monetary machine along lines tending to avoid market fluctuations would harm no one, would be of inestimablo value to the nation and eliminate much of the weariness which results from endeavouring to budget for 80/ worth of necessities on a 70/ income. ]?.. GROSE.
