UNIVERSITY LECTURES.

I made 110 sweeping assertion that "all" lectures in Auckland are sparsely attended. 1 pointed out that it was a matter for regret that such, an informative lecture as the one I referred to attracted such, a small audience. I attended a quasi-scientific lecture ill the University the other evening, and the packed. That tlio lecture was popular was brought home to me very emphatically by the fact that two young ladies seated behind me kept up an irritating running commentary the whole evening. The lecture was most interesting, despite the fact that 'the lecturer covered a large landscape in a short time. He no doubt understood that it was necessary that he should not dilate too long on one theme, and presented his data in a popular dressing. (Lacking probably a keen sense of humour, I could not ..understa«d, the;ripples of laughter among tfie audience when" some aspect of scientific data was thrown on the screen.) My fire was drawn, and I rushed into print, because I heard the Leader of the Opposition bewail, with a pathos that almost amounted to a sob, the awful consequences that were sure to follow the Government's retrenchment in the matter of education. (Mr. Savage has probably forgotten the vast amount the people of this Dominion spend in one day and night on pictures.) I only mention this to prove that there is no evidence that our people, young or old, are prevented in any way from drinking of "the Pierian spring" as deeply as they feel inclined to.
