WHY HE RESIGNED.
MR. RAMSAY MacDONALD. "TROUBLED BY ILL-HEALTH." (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) DUNEDIN, this day. The fact that Mr. Ramsay Mac Donald had relinquished the Prime Ministership because of ill-health and no other reason was commented on by Captain R. G. Briscoe, a Unionist member of the House of Commons, who is visiting Dunedin. Captain Briscoe said there was 110 question of loss of confidence in Mr. Mac Donald as leader of the National Government. His bitterest opponents did not want his resignation in the way that it came. Mr. Mac Donald put up a gallant fight, but lie was struggling against terrible oilds. He was unable to do more than about two hours' work a day; his eyes gave out ainl the work became more than he could sustain. Captain Briscoe stressed the fact that Mr. Mac Donald was a great power for the general good and he had wielded his power as head of the National Government for the good of the nation as a whole. He was a man who had made great sacrifices for his country and as such he was entitled to the admiration of his fellows and also to a place in British history.
