JURY LAW.
PARLIAMENT'S RIGHT. AMENDING BILL DRAFTED. "GIFTS FROM THE GREEKS." (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. "Bewaro of the Greeks when they come bringing gifts." This advice was given in the House of Representatives to-day to Mr. F. W. Schramm (Labour, Auckland East) by Mr. W. E. Barnard (Labour, Napier), when the former was introducing the Juries Amendment Bill after the Minister of Justice, Mr. Cobbe, had intimated that the bill should go to the Statutes Revision Committee. Mr. Schramm said the , law was amended in 1924, and he wished to restove it to that existing before the alteration, which was made by Order-in-Council. There had been much dissatisfaction in the intervening years. The bill also gave the right of ( trial by jury in actions for damages for' personal injuries founded upon a breach of contract.
Mr. W. E. Barnard (Labour, Napier) said the bill gave to Parliament the right to be consulted in any alteration affecting the jury law. It was an important principle. He was glad to know that the Minister of Justice, Mr. Cpbbe, had said it should go to the Statutes Revision Committee. There was some hope by that statement that the Government might support the measure. The bill was read a second time pro forma and referred to the Statutes Revision Committee.
