Ever since control of the U.S.S. Company passed to the P. and 0. DO attempt has been made to foster the intercolonial trade. The gentlemen in England don't understand it and don't try to, with the result that it is surely being strangled. frequent passenger to Sydney for over -0 years one cannot help but notice the difference in the typo of passenger. Almost the only travellers now are the wealthy or those who have to make the trip for some particular reason. The holiday tripper is no _ more. Thousands of young people used to visit Australia regularly on holiday, but now the fares are so high that it is simply out of the question. The average colonial doesn't want & luxury liner or luxurious accommodation, but reasonable cabins and plain food at a P ric ® that he can afford to pay. Nearly every second person one meets would like to visit Sydney, and it only needs a far-sighted policy with an all-round fare-reduction and some cheap excursions at seasonable times to popularise the trip. About £7 return excursion rat f* would mean full ships. Excursion ships could be all one class (tourist). If a thing is beyond the pockets of the people, no one buys. There is a rich harvest to be reaped by a company with the correct outlook. S. PORTER-
