HARBOUR BRIDGE.

WHAT IS POSITION ?

CITY COUNCIL'S ATTITUDE. REQUEST MADE TO COMPANY. The Auckland Harbour Bridge proposal again came before the Auckland City Council last evening. At a former meeting a previous resolution was reaffirmed that in the opinion of the council the authority of the Auckland Harbour Bridge Company should be surrendered to the Government, and the Harbour Bridge Empowering Act repealed.

Copies of the resolution were forwarded to the various Auckland local bodies, and various opinions have been expressed in the replies received.

The Birkenhead and Takapuna Borough Councils supported the City Council's attitude, the Northcote Borough Council asked for a conference of interested local bodies. The Mount Roskill Road Board, Panmure Road Board, Manurewa Town Board and Papakura Town Board declined to take any action.

I The deputy-Mayor. Mr. B. Martin, moved that the City Council should ask the Auckland Harbour Bridge Company to say what the position was at the present time. IJe said that under the Act there were directors, one to be appointed by the City Council, and if a vacancy occurred the council should (ill it. That, suggested that in the opinion of the Government the City Council should.be in touch with the position, whatever it might he. The council had objected to the relationship between its representative and the company and had withdrawn the nominee 'of the council from the board of directors. The council was entitled to ask what was the position at the present time, as the people of Auckland were vitally interested as well as the company. The City Council should be in. touch with the position and they were giving the company the opportunity to say what the position was.

Mr. J. S. Stewart said it was the duty of the local bodies to build the bridge. Mr. T. Bloodwortli said tlicy should ask for the information for the next meeting of the council and he suggested that the local bodies should be called together to discuss the matter. The motion, requesting the company to give the information sought, was carried.
