THE CLASSIC CLUB.
A delightful programme of vocal and instrumental music was presented at the Classic Club's eleventh meeting of the season on Tuesday evening last. An item of special interest to the large audience of members and friends was the performance of Somervell'3 "Maud" Cycle by Mr. Arthur Thomson. This beautiful cycle, 'comprising 12 songs, is all too seldom heard in its entirety.
Other performers were: Miss Irene Rich, who sang "Ye Powers that Dwsll Below" (Cluck), "The Mock Suns," "The Watercourse" • and "The Vane" (Schubert); Miss Sheila Macindoc, who sang "Sherwood" (Dear), "Sing, Break Into Song" (Mallinson), "'Tis Snowing'' (Bemberg) and "Chanson de Florian" (Godard). Miss Gwenda Weir contributed soprano solos, "Sorrowful Here and Lonely" (Donizetti), "The Sunset, Glow" (Schubert), "The May Night" and "The Blacksmith" (Brahms). Mr. Leslie Russell sang "The Gentle Maiden" (arr. Somervell), "Turn Ye to Me" (a"r. Moffat), "Road to the Isles" (arr Kennedy-Fraser), "I'll Sing '1 bee Songs of Araby" (Clay) and "Twin Flames" (Gould). Mr. Harold Davis sang "Song of Jami" and "From My Tent" (Diclimont) and "Inter Nos" (Maefayden). Pianoforte solos, "Policliinelle" (Rachmaninoff), "Anecdote" (Vogrich) and "Caprice No. 2" (York Bowen), were rendered by Miss Pearl Wallace; and Prelude-aria, "The world is but smoke and shadow" (Bach - Rummell) and Choral Prelude, "What God doth that is rightly done" (Kellner-Rummell), byMiss Pearl George.
