MAUI POMARE MEMORIAL.

GOVERNMENT HEUP WANTED,

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Warm approval of the proposal to erect a memorial and Maori meetinghouse at Waitara in honour of the late Sir Maui Pomare was expressed by the Minister in charge of Native Affairs, Mr. Forbes, and the Minister of Finance, Mr. Coates, when replying to a deputation of Taranaki Maoris at Lower Hutt to-day. Sir Apirana Ngata said it was proposed to unveil the memorial in June next, on the anniversary of the death of Sir Maui Pomare. A grant of £700 toward the cost of the work was sought. It was estimated that the meetinghouse would cost £3500, of which it was hoped the Government would contri bute £250 from the Consoliated Fund. Mr. Coates said he would discuss the question with Sir Apirana Ngata and Mr. Taite te Tomo (Northern Maori) when the Estimates were under consideration.
