A SUCCESSFUL SEASON.
TE AROHA JOCKEY CLUB. THE ANNUAL MEETING. The president, Mr. R. L. Somers, presided at the annual meeting of the Te Arolia Jockey Club. The chairman expressed satisfaction with the result of the year's operations, and the improvement in the financial position of the club. The bank overdraft had been wiped out, and the guarantee of the committee duly cancelled. In the statistics of many clubs in New Zealand it was clearly shown that the club, without exception, led the Dominion in respect to a two-day meeting, and its turnover was greater than that of many four-day gatherings. The committee had taken into consideration the effecting of improvements proposed last year, those of terracing the lawn to give more accommodation, and the addition to the totalisator house. The farm account had shown a gratifying profit. In the matter of the club's application for a further two days' racing permit the conference stated that an extra two days' permit "was not available, and the club's reply was to the effect that one day would not be of any U6e whatever. Much had been heard of the heavy taxation on racing clubs, and he felt sure that during the coming session the Government would deal with the matter of a reduction. He considered that many clubs had themselves to blame for the decreases registered, as the stakes offered were in many cases insufficient for owners at a distance to pay expenses. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr. R. L. Somers (re-elected); vice-presidents, Messrs. J. B. Johnson, R. Burke and P. Baine (reelected); treasurer, Mr. J. P. Somers (reflected); committee, Messrs. F. Rowe, J. Kenny, C. H. Murphy and G. McGlashan.
